Fantasy Premier League | GW08: Most disappointing FPL players so far

With 7 gameweeks behind us, all FPL managers should have a fair sense of the performing players whom they want in the lineups, be it in the Classic or Draft version of the game. This gameweek, we focus on something different – the players whom have disappointed thus far and we recommend what to do with them.

  • David de Gea (MNU | GK | 5.9m) – 20pts

Last season, de Gea had 18 clean sheets and he has only a solitary one to date this year. He is the most expensive and sought after GK in the game so you should expect a lot more from him. VERDICT: Hold. It is difficult to see how United’s form can get any worse than it is now. Generally, we also advocate not wasting a transfer on GK so over a long term, De Gea is a keeper (pun intended). Same for Draft – hold on to him regardless.

  • Hugo Lloris (TOT | GK | 5.4m) – 11pts

World Cup winner Lloris is having a stuttering season so far, with off-pitch issues and injuries curtailing his game time. He is listed as fit to play at time of writing and Spurs have Cardiff at home and West Ham away to come immediately. VERDICT: BUY. With Vorm also out, there is incentive at the club to push Lloris into action even if he is not 100% mentally and physically.

  • Phil Jones (MNU | DF | 5.2m) – 0pts

Jones is another victim of United’s poor form. He was one of the favourite picks in defence last term but he has yet to register a single FPL pt to date, having only played 57mins. VERDICT: SELL. United may rotate their backline a bit but there is no indication Jones will be back in favour. In any case, should avoid United defenders if you don’t already have them)

  • Alexis Sanchez (MNU | MF | 10.1m) – 15pts

A lot has been written about Sanchez in the press and in FPL, he has suffered a price fall of 0.4m which is the highest. He has registered just 2 assists to date and has missed two games entirely. VERDICT: SELL. Sanchez has epitomised United’s poor form and he simply does not have the heart to put in a shift for his team. Very hard to see how he will improve and way too expensive to be patient with.

  • Pascal Gross (BRI | MF | 6.7m) – 11pts

Last year’s surprise package had been lackluster so far. Injuries have kept him out for the past three games but he is expected to be back in GW08. Interestingly, Brighton has a very good run of games to come and will not play a top 6 side until GW17. VERDICT: BUY. His price fall to 6.7 actually makes Gross an interesting selection. He involves himself with his side’s set-pieces so if he plays we can expect points to flow.

  • Max Meyer (CRY | MF | 5.7m) – 8pts

We featured the German midfielder in one of our early-season article but he has not lived up to the mark. Having only started a single game so far, he has not proven himself in this league and Crystal Palace does have more options in his preferred position. VERDICT: SELL. Don’t be lured by his low price. He is not likely to play a key role in Palace’s campaign.

  • Gabriel Jesus (MCI | FW | 10.2m) – 12pts

The Brazilian has only started one game so far and registered a single goal. It is clear that Aguero is Pep Guardiola’s first choice forward and Jesus will only get a look-in occasionally. He is growing into an auxiliary player for City and may have to settle for that this season. Trouble with Jesus is that he is often deployed as a sub (already 4 times this season) and his points will count. VERDICT: SELL (Classic) | HOLD (draft) Jesus is too expensive in Classic FPL to hold but if you have him in draft, he may be worth keep. Nov / Dec are times when fixtures pile and and we think he will game much more game time.

  • Christian Eriksen (TOT | MF | 9.2m)

Eriksen is another player not reaching his heights of previous season. In 6 games he has only registered 2 assists and does not appear to assert the same amount of influence as he did last year. An injury will keep him out until at least GW10 and thereafter Spurs faces City, Chelsea and Arsenal over 5 GWs in a tricky run. VERDICT: SELL (Classic) | HOLD (draft) It is obvious to offload him in Classic since his value will fall over the next few weeks. In draft however, his short term injury should be ok for you to hold out.

  • Alvaro Morata (CHE | FW | 8.8m)  – 14pts

Morata did not exactly shine last year and it has started pretty much the same this term. He has only played one full 90min thus far and has a single goal to his name. In recent weeks he has been dropped in favour of Oliver Giroud but nothing suggests that he will make a swift return to the starting XI. VERDICT: SELL Unless there is injury to Giroud, we expect Morata to stay on the bench and be used more regularly for Cup and Europa League games. Way too expensive to hold and wait. Sell, both in Classic and Draft.
