5 Questions Asked by a FPL Newbie

Remember the show “Kids Say the Darndest Things” back in the late 1990s? Hope not, because that means that you are old. Oh, and also that show was hosted by the now infamous Bill Crosby.

This week, our FPL circle of FF Titans editors saw a population increase of one as a mate took up FPL for the first time in his life. FF Newb, as we now call him, has been a football fan since Bill Crosby was still considered a positive role model decided to enter a team into Fantasy Premier League. He supports Liverpool for a long time now, know most of the Premier League players, have heard about the game but is participating it for the first time.

We gave him an opportunity to ask five questions about the game, which he did, like a kid:

Do you make transfers every week?

FF Titans: Well, not every week, no. You do get one Free Transfer (FT) every week but the maximum number of FTs you can accumulate at any one time is two. Suffice to say, if you already have two FTs for that week and you do not make a transfer that week, you will continue to have two the next week, not three. Any transfers you make above your FT for that game week will cost you a hit of -4 to your overall FPL pts – however, always use the -4 hit wisely.

As a broad strategy, we do not make transfers for the sake of making them. If you utilise a FT to bring someone in for that GW, make sure you play him. If we are on one FT for the week and are generally okay with the first XI, we will keep the FT so that we have two the next week.

Who is Pukki?

FF Titans: Teemu Pukki is a Norwich City forward who has taken the Fantasy Premier League (and by the same extent, the Premier League) by storm after his 5 goals in his first three game weeks. The 29-year-old Finn is well-traveled, having already played in Finland, Spain, Germany, Scotland and Denmark before joining the Canaries on a free transfer in the summer of 2018.

He was sensational for Norwich in the EFL Championship, scoring 30 goals in 46 appearances. His club were promoted as champions and he won the EFL Championship of the year award.

In the Premier League, he is the currently the player with the highest tally of points, 49pts from 5 games. He is involved in every single Norwich goal thus far. His exploits have prompted a furry of transfers, pushing his FPL price by +0.5 in a very short time. At time of writing, he is owned by nearly 40% of all FPL managers and this ratio looks likely to rise again.

Suffice to say, every FPL manager is talking about him now but the real question is – can his sensational form last?

I accidentally activated the Free Hit, what now?

FF Titans: There is nothing you can do to reverse the utilization, your best bet now is to get the best out of your GW’s squad. Free Hit is one of the three chips available to all FPL managers over the course of a season (more of those in other articles).

When do I use the Wildcard?

FF Titans: : Here is the FAQ lifted off the official page:

  • A wildcard allows you to make unlimited free transfers throughout a Gameweek. Playing a wildcard will remove any points deductions from transfers already made in the same Gameweek.
  • You play a wildcard when you want to make multiple changes to your team, for example Gameweeks when teams are playing more than once, or when your team is underperforming or has a lot of injuries.
  • When using a wildcard, you must remain within your current budget. There is no unlimited budget when using a wildcard
  • The Wildcard chip can be used twice a season, once in the first half of the season (before Sat 28 Dec 22:00) and once in the second half of the season.
  • Wildcards are played on the transfers page but aren’t active until you have confirmed the transfers.

To keep things very simple, use the wildcard when you feel the desire to change 4-5 players in your team. There is no right time to use a wildcard but always plan ahead of time.

What is considered a good score in a game week?

scoring about average

FF Titans: This really boils down to expectations but broadly speaking, any game week score above the average is considered decent. Don’t forget that there are current 6.4m players in the game from over the globe and this number is growing. Over the course of 38 game weeks, if you can finish in the top 1% (~64,000) it would be considered superb by any standards, Newbie or otherwise.
