Football Free Agents

The transfer windows for the UK as well as Europe has finally closed and most of the clubs should have completed their transfer activity for the summer. However, it is not unheard of for clubs to dip into the free agent market to beef up their squad if there are any unforeseen injuries to the squad. We have also recently read that Martin Skrtel and Shinji Okazaki both had their contracts mutually terminated by their respective clubs barely after joining them in summer. Let’s look at who’s still out there and available for your clubs!

  1. Michel Vorm (Dutch)
  2. Heinz Lindner (Austrian)
  3. Vincent Enyeama (Nigeria)
  4. Adam Bogdan (Hungarian)

There’s a good mixture of experience amongst the goalkeepers who are still available as free agents including most capped Nigerian goalie Vincent Enyeama, Hungarian international Adam Bogdan who recently travelled with Liverpool for preseason as well as Dutch international Michel Vorm who had been recently linked with the Reds as well. More interestingly, Austrian international Heinz Lindner who recently left Swiss club Grasshoppers can also be a good choice as at the age of 29, he still has quite a few more years to go in his career.

  1. Danny Simpson (English)
  2. Fabio Coentrao (Portugese)
  3. Martin Olsson (Swedish)
  4. Ivan Strinic (Croat)
  5. Gabriel Paletta (Argentinian)
  6. Ignatio Abate (Italian)
  7. Younes Kaboul (French)
  8. Johan Djourou (Swiss)

There are ex Premier League winners (Danny Simpson), FA Cup winners (Johan Djourou), ex Galaticos (Fabio Coentrao) and ex-World Cup semi-finalists (Ivan Strinic). All in all, plenty of international experience amongst all those who are still available as free agents.

  1. Hatem Ben Arfa (French)
  2. Fredy Guarin (Colombian)
  3. Claudio Marchisio (Italian)
  4. Yoann Gourcuff (French)
  5. Jack Rodwell (English)
  6. Lewis Holtby (German)
  7. Andrea Bertolacci (Italian)
  8. Birkir Bjarnason (Icelandic)
  9. Keisuke Honda (Japanese)

In this mix, there are ex French player of the year (Yoann Gourcuff), MVP of an Asian Cup (Keisuke Honda) as well as players with plenty of national team experiences.

  1. Wilfried Bony (Ivory Coast)
  2. Benjamin Moukandjo (Cameroonian)
  3. Giuseppe Rossi (Italian)
  4. Obafemi Martins (Nigerian)

As compared to the rest of the list, the strikers list perhaps looks the most intimidating. However, all 4 strikers have had established international and club careers and at their peak, were the subject of multi-million dollar transfers.
