UCL Fantasy Shakthar Donetsk Team Preview

Shakthar Donetsk are one of the biggest teams to come out of the Ukraine since 2009, the other being Dynamo Kiev. Both teams are to date the only two Ukrainian clubs to have won major European honours. Shakthar Donetsk are becoming almost mainstays in the UEFA Champions League in the modern age.

The club is technically based in the city of Donetsk, in an area currently still seeing military violence from pro-Russian separatist groups in region.

In 2014, the club left their home stadium of the the Donbass Arena (a Euro 2012 venue) and have used several other stadiums in Ukraine as home grounds. This season, they will share a home stadium with their rivals Dynamo Kiev at Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex, venue of the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final.

Shakthar have a history of looking for talented young players from Brazil to form the base of their attack, while the defence would supplied by largely Ukrainian talent. Over the years, they have seen a huge talent pool of Brazilian players coming thru the ranks of the club. Players like Luiz Adriano, Alex Teixeira and Bernard have won trophies with Shakhtar and left the club on high transfer fees.

Currently, the team has 11 Brazilian nationals in their ranks.

Domestic Domination

The Ukrainian Premier League was formed in 1992 after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Since then, Shakthar Donetsk and Dynamo Kiev had dominated the proceedings, winning the titles 13 and 15 times respectively.

In fact, the duo are the only teams to have played every game of the Ukrainian top flight since its formation.

Shakhtar have also won the domestic cup a record 13 times, 1 more than Dynamo.

In the 2010s, Shakthar had enjoyed a clear edge of their rivals. They won the domestic title 8 of the 10 times.

European Exploits

Shakhtar Donetsk’s finest moment in European competitions was winning the 2008/09 UEFA Cup, beating Werder Bremen in the Final.

They have played in the Group stages of the Champions League for 21 consecutive seasons, reaching the quarter-finals in 2011. More often than not, their adventures in the Champions League end in the Group Stages.

2020/21 UCL Fixtures

Shakhtar Donetsk are drawn in a tough group with Real Madrid and Inter Milan but are in dreamland after pulling off a shock win at the Bernaubeu against Real Madrid on MD1. Also, they were actually missing up to 10 players for that win because of a COVID-19 outbreak within the team.

German side Borussia Monchengladbach makes up this Group.

  • Tete (MID) – The 20yo was the star of MD1, providing 2 assists and scoring once at the Bernanbeu. Tete is highly rated and rumors have suggested that the winger is worth upwards of 100m and is monitored by Liverpool and Manchester United. This could be the breakout season for the Brazilian.
  • Junior Moraes (FWD) – Ukrainian International, priced at 7.5 million striker, picked by 0% of players. Would have been the team’s first choice striker up front, but was ruled out due to COVID-19.
  • Marquinhos (MID) – Marquinhos is priced at 4.5 million midfielder, picked by 5% of players. He is a left wing back who likes to go forward.
