FPL Christmas Picks – What would you like in your Christmas Stockings?
It’s that time of year when you are rushing around for presents, sending Christmas cards to people you’ve not spoken to for months and football games come thick and fast.
I was looking at essential picks for this period and instead of going for the big presents like the Kane’s, Salah’s of this world that have been discussed regularly. I thought I would look at key enablers that give you the budget to afford 3/4 premiums, consistent security of starts and are more than just bench warmers.
The safe socks and handkerchiefs of the squad, as I like to call it.

The safe pair of socks
Isn’t it nice when you feel the warmth and familiarity of those warm winter socks?
FPL Christmas Picks #1 – CHARLIE TAYLOR £4.4m WOL, lee, SHU, FUL
Back-to-back clean sheets away to Arsenal and Aston Villa shows that Burnley are finally getting back to the tight discipline in defence that has under pinned their success over the previous seasons.
With Burnley’s next 4 fixtures looking favourable, especially the home games against Sheff United and Fulham, there is every reason to expect more clean sheets. At £4.4m, he is the best priced defender for value and a great enabler to free up cash for bigger purchases.
Not always the most interesting of presents but effective and sometimes can dazzle with colour.
FPL Christmas Picks #2 – TOMAS SOUCEK £5.0m – che, BHA, sou, eve
He may look ungainly, but he is effective, especially at heading set pieces. He is David Moyes modern day Fellaini.
Teams seem to have forgotten how to defend set pieces with 67 headed goals already this season. If this continues at this rate it will surpass last seasons 153 headed goals by some distance. In fact, West Ham only scored 7 headed goals in 2019/20 season, this season they are the third highest with 6.
A great enabler as a first sub or 4th midfield and with 3 goals (2 headers) and an assist, he looks vastly under-priced at £5m. Bear in mind West Ham also have a favourable DGW in GW19.
The £25 voucher
Never the most glamorous of presents but can lead to something exciting.
FPL Christmas Picks #3 – Che Adams £6.0m – MCI, ful, WHU, LIV
Slightly under the radar against the likes of Bamford, Watkins and Wilson, Che Adams is a snip at this price.
One of the advantages he has over the other strikers is that he is not seen as a main threat upfront. Partnered alongside the classy Danny Ings, allows Adams to have more space and time to shoot or assist the willing runners, especially Theo Walcott.
Southampton are a team that are a handful for anyone and with a consistent line up, more returns are coming for Adams to add to his 4 goals and 5 assists.
Max price of a £10 present secretly brought by someone at work. It’s usually something you laugh at, and then wonder what to do it with it and sometimes you find a use for it.
FPL Christmas Picks #4 – ERIC DIER £5.0m – LEI, wol, FUL, LEE
Eric Dier might not be a name that comes to everyone’s mind, but he seems to be one of Mourinho’s trusted lieutenants.
With Spurs being the tightest defence in the league, he looks value at £5m. They have some enticing fixtures coming up and are looking like a typical Mourinho team that are hard to break down. Dier is solid if unspectacular, but the interesting point over the last two games is that he has taken two direct free kicks. When you see him push Kane away, then he must be good right? Watch this space….
I hope you all enjoy the festive fixtures, keep well and positive and enjoy this time of year.
