Man behind FPL Insider Revealed

The person behind the now famous FPL “bot” and Twitter account FPL Insider has been revealed by BBC in an exclusive interview.

The headlines

The account made headlines when it apparently “leaked” the news of Jack Grealish’s injury and purportedly gave their opponents Leicester the advantage prior to their league meeting.

Subsequently, Villa banned their players and staff from the FPL platform in hope of culling future leaks.

The now viral tweet is below, revealing Grealish’s injuries to the world minutes before the team news was announced even though the club tried its best to conceal it.

The man is a fan

The man is a 32-year-old Norwegian who only goes by his first name Henning. Ironically, he is an Aston Villa fan.

FPL Insider is a bot account, running off a script to scan FPL accounts of staff, players and junior players. When an “insider” removes one of their teammates from their fantasy line-up, the bot picks it up and tweets it automatically.

According to Henning, he started manually looking up team information from Google, LinkedIn and Football Manager 21 to find names of staff and even junior players. From there he found individual mini-leagues. Then his bot started to do its magic.

The account actually only started in Feb 2021 but already has 34k followers at time of writing.

Insights to FPL

FPL GW33+ Stats

In his interview, he also offered some insights on how professional players play FPL:

“Wolves have a league where it’s basically all the first team players.”

and

“Everton had funny names that you really had to be clever to find out who they were.”

However, it is key to note that the account only tweets the information after each FPL transfer deadline. It may be fun and games but in reality it does not really help FPL managers (or Henning himself).

Sorry, not sorry

Henning does not regret that Aston Villa had been caught up in this storm, saying that his tweet only confirmed already existing rumours.

He also suspects Premier League clubs may already use this information themselves:

“They know that opposition players play fantasy football weekly and I would imagine big clubs all have some kind of analyst that has access to this data already.”

FPL record

Henning has certainly written himself in FPL Community folklore.

FPL Community Spirit

His personal account is Checkmate FPL, where he discusses his own selections and choices. He has revealed that he is currently “just outside” the top 100k in OR.
